Enhanced Conversions

A Google Ads feature that sends hashed first-party customer data — typically the email address captured at checkout — to Google for privacy-safe matching, recovering conversions lost to cross-device journeys, ad blockers, and browser privacy restrictions.

You can see which campaigns converted in Google Ads. What you can’t see is the click from three days ago on a different device — or the session where an ad blocker stripped the cookie before the tag fired. Enhanced Conversions takes the email address your customer typed at checkout, hashes it with SHA-256, and sends it to Google for matching against signed-in Google accounts.

How it shows up in the wild

Tennis Express (sports equipment retailer): After enabling Enhanced Conversions for web, first-party cookie attribution climbed to 89%. Conversions across Search campaigns grew 114% year over year. These were cross-device journeys the standard tag never saw.

Bidmark (UK performance agency): A premium home goods ecommerce client hit a 95% match rate. The industry benchmark is 60–70%. Aligning the client’s CRM with Google Ads and passing hashed email at checkout produced measurable improvement within four weeks.

Why it matters

Smart Bidding trains on the conversions Google can see. Cross-device purchases, ad-blocked sessions, and iOS-restricted journeys are invisible to standard tags. Missing signals teach the algorithm a distorted picture of which campaigns generate revenue.

My hunch is that the recovery gap is larger for D2C brands than aggregate benchmarks suggest. Brands with mobile-heavy audiences converting on desktop later probably sit closer to the 40% end of the 15–40% recovery range.

Frequently asked questions

Does Enhanced Conversions replace server-side tracking? No. Enhanced Conversions is a supplementary layer on top of the standard Google tag — it improves what the browser-level tag can match, but it still fires client-side. Server-side tracking handles cases where the tag itself can’t fire. The two address different gaps.

How much conversion recovery should I expect? 15–40% of conversions missed by standard tags is the commonly cited range. The gap is narrower for desktop-only audiences and wider for mobile-first brands where cross-device journeys are frequent.

Does it work with Smart Bidding and Performance Max? Yes, and both improve for it. Smart Bidding strategies like Target ROAS and Target CPA consume Enhanced Conversions signals directly. Performance Max uses the same signals to improve delivery targeting. Both get better when the underlying conversion data is more complete.
