Final URL Expansion

A Google Ads setting that allows Google to override a campaign's specified landing page and route a click to a different page on the same domain that Google judges more relevant to the user's query.

Your campaign’s final URL is set to the page you chose. Google might route the click to a product page, a category page, or a subdirectory it scored as more relevant to that specific query. Final URL Expansion is the name for that decision.

It runs in Performance Max by default and in AI Max for Search when the full feature suite is enabled. Google reads your site, scores each page for relevance to the incoming query, and selects the landing page at the moment the click fires.

How it shows up in the wild

Google (AI Max benchmark data, 2026): Non-retail Search campaigns running the full AI Max suite see +7% more conversions at similar CPA/ROAS with Final URL Expansion enabled, per Google’s published benchmarks. Every Dynamic Search Ad campaign is scheduled for auto-migration to AI Max by September 2026. Campaigns using Automatically Created Assets or campaign-level broad match migrate first.

ALM Corp (250+ real Search campaigns, March 2026): Median revenue rose 13% after AI Max activation, per ALM Corp’s cross-account study. Median CPA also rose 16%. Campaign-level ROAS varied from +42% to −35% within that sample.

AdNabu (Performance Max ecommerce guide, 2026): Routing users to the exact product page matching their query improved ROAS on well-structured ecommerce catalogs. On sites with weak page-level differentiation, the same feature delivered paid clicks to blog posts and policy pages with no conversion path. URL exclusions are the advertiser’s only lever to block those destinations.

Why it matters

The landing page is no longer a fixed campaign input. Google selects it at query time from your domain, within whatever URL exclusions you’ve set. My hunch is that accounts with well-differentiated product pages and clean URL exclusion lists see the most consistent gains.

  • AI Max for Search — the campaign feature suite that bundles Final URL Expansion with search term expansion and auto-generated headlines
  • Performance Max — the cross-surface campaign type where Final URL Expansion runs by default
  • Search Intent — what Google reads from each query to decide which page to route the click to

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn Final URL Expansion off? In Performance Max, Final URL Expansion can be disabled in campaign settings. In AI Max for Search, it cannot be turned off separately. URL exclusions are the only way to mark specific pages or directories as ineligible for expansion traffic.

What’s the difference between Final URL Expansion and Dynamic Search Ads? DSA was a campaign type: Google crawled your site to generate both the ad headline and the landing page URL for each query. Final URL Expansion is an overlay within a keyword campaign that can override the landing page URL you chose, without changing the keywords. After September 2026, DSA is auto-migrated to AI Max, which brings the same site-crawl URL logic into keyword campaigns.
