Google Shopping Campaigns
A Google Ads campaign type that displays product image, price, and store name in search results, triggered by your Merchant Center product feed rather than keyword bids.
When someone searches “glass water bottle” on Google, a row of product images — showing price, rating, and store name — appears above the organic results. Those are Shopping ads. Unlike Search campaigns, where you bid on keywords, Shopping campaigns pull from your product feed in Google Merchant Center: Google reads your product title, category, GTIN, and price to decide which queries match.
The campaign type generating those ads is a Standard Shopping campaign. It lets advertisers set bids by product group, add negative keywords to block low-intent searches, and prioritize specific products for specific traffic.
How it shows up in the wild
Fospha (measurement platform, working with Google, Q4 2025): 10–20% of Google budget allocated to Demand Gen — on top of existing Shopping and Search — doubled ROAS versus brands spending under 5% on the channel, across 25 retail ecommerce brands in fashion, beauty, and consumer goods. Adding just one new Google channel beyond Shopping delivered 14% higher ROAS; adding two delivered 37%.
Optmyzr (Google Ads optimization platform, 2024–2025 campaign analysis): 82% of advertisers ran Standard Shopping alongside PMax across 24,702 campaigns. Hybrid accounts outperformed single-campaign setups. Standard Shopping’s contribution: search term reports that PMax withholds, direct negative keyword control, and product-group bids that route spend precisely to hero SKUs.
Why it matters
Shopping campaigns absorb 76% of US retail search ad spend and generate 85% of all retail clicks on Google. My hunch is that Standard Shopping’s durability comes down to query-level transparency.
PMax hides which search terms triggered your ads. Standard Shopping surfaces them.

Frequently asked questions
Do Shopping campaigns use keywords? Not in the traditional sense. Google matches products to queries using the product feed — title, category, GTIN, attributes — rather than keyword bids. Negative keywords apply: add them at campaign or ad group level to block low-intent queries.
What’s the difference between Standard Shopping and Performance Max? Standard Shopping runs in Shopping and Search placements only, with product-group bids and campaign-level negative keywords you set directly. PMax runs across all Google surfaces — Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover — with automated bidding and no query-level visibility. The 82% co-occurrence in Optmyzr’s data reflects the practical answer: most accounts run both.
When should I use tROAS instead of manual CPC? tROAS requires conversion history — practitioners generally recommend 30–50 conversions per month before enabling it. Manual CPC gives direct control at account launch or when volume is too thin for automated bidding to optimize reliably.
